The New Lawwoman In Town

Posted on Sun Dec 16th, 2018 @ 4:57pm by Admiral Zachary O'Connell

Mission: Task Force Operations
Location: Subspace Communication
Timeline: 1 MAY 2389

Lieutenant Heather Kowal was still aboard the USS Valiant, which was en route to Starbase 310. Heather was not her normally cool and collected self as she ran between her office and her quarters trying to complete handoff of her duties, pack, and prepare for her new assignment. She also was dealing with saying goodbye to her friends, family, and even a love interest.

She pulled a brush from her desk drawer and ran it through her hair before dropping it into a box and then pushing it away from camera view. She checked her watch and then she began typing commands into the computer to connect to Starbase 72 so she'd be able to speak with her new Task Force Commander, Admiral O'Connell.

When the connection was finally made and she spoke to his assistant she was placed on hold again. She felt her heart beating nervously but put on her best game face for speaking with who would be certainly the most senior officer she'd ever had to deal with professionally.

The screen flashed, shifting from the familiar hold screen featuring the logo for the Fourth Fleet's Task Force 72 to that of Admiral Zachary O'Connell. Though neither the admiral or the lieutenant were familiar with each other, it might be painfully obvious to her that the admiral was brandishing dark circles under his eyes.

"Good morning, Admiral," Heather said, cheerfully. "I'm Lieutenant Kowal the new Commanding Officer of the Law Enforcement Team."

"Congratulations, Lieutenant," Zachary greeted, offering a simple gratitude. "You certainly have come aboard during very interesting times. I'm sure you're up to speed with recent events in the Alpha Quadrant?"

"With what limited information crossed the Valiant, sir. The XO and I worked together to make up a little intel section... Have to improvise a little on the Defiants."

Zachary nodded his understanding. His early career was firmly rooted in Engineering, and it was only the last few years as brass that he'd started to understand the values of each class, as well as their unique limitations. "So you're a bit resourceful then? A valuable skill needed as the head of a law enforcement team."

"I can definitely offer resourceful, sir," she said, with a grin. "Do you have any immediate concerns in the area that you'd like to focus the efforts of the team on?"

"There's rumors of unrest on our colonies close to the Tzenkethi and Talarian borders," Zachary shared. "All sorts of rumors are flying around, including talk some potentially illegal activities. Even unrest."

"I've heard some rumors through intel channels but nothing that Valiant had dealt with directly, sir," she explained. "Is this something you want us directly looking into or just something to keep an eye on for the future?"

"Keep an eye on it," Zachary instructed. LET might be assigned to Task Force 72, but it wasn't up to the Admiral to give them all of their direction. He was, after all, not above the law. "Just know that reports of smuggling have tripled since the Alrakis Pact. I'm sure you'll have plenty to keep your team busy outside of that."

"We will be sure to keep an eye on it, sir," she said, with a nod. "Is there anything else of major concern I should know about?"

"Just stay out of trouble," the Admiral warned. "I've already lost a handful of intelligence and engineering teams, starships and who knows what else. I lose anymore, and you'll find yourself reporting to a new TFCO. I personally don't want that to happen, and I'm sure you don't as well. The next boss might not be as friendly as I."

Heather fought the urge to smile it was a bit amusing to hear someone state this out loud but she also understood how serious her new boss was being. She appreciated his bluntness and hoped that her experiences with him continued to be as open.

"You've got it, sir," she said, with a nod.

Zachary nodded as well, providing confirmation of her understanding. "Any final questions, Lieutenant?"

"Not yet sir, but I'm not there yet... I will let you know if anything comes up," she said, with a smile and a slight nod.

"See that you do," the Admiral stated. "My comm will always be open, Lieutenant. Good luck out there." The screen flickered, changing the display to the Task Force logo and the words End Transmission set upon a black backdrop.
